Will Readiness Check: Does Your Will Cover What You Actually Own

A free check on whether your will covers what you own today, the gaps most wills leave open around digital assets, and the questions to take to a lawyer next.

This checks whether a will would actually do its job — that it exists, that somebody can find the original, and that it has not been quietly overtaken by a change in your life. It does not check whether a will is valid where you live; only a qualified professional in your jurisdiction can tell you that.

Does it exist

Do you have a written will?

Written and signed, not drafted and never finished.

Does it cover everything you own, including anything held abroad?

Assets in another country are the ones most often left out.

Does it name who should administer your estate?

An executor, personal representative, or whatever the equivalent is called where you are.

Could it be found and used

Does at least one person know the original exists and where it is?

A will nobody can find is treated the same as a will that was never written.

Is that person outside your household?

A single fire, flood or burglary should not take out both you and the record of your wishes.

Is there a copy stored separately from the original?

A copy is not a substitute for the original, but it tells people what to look for.

Is it still current

Has it been reviewed since your last major life change?

Marriage, separation, a birth, a death, a move to another country, a business sale.

Do the beneficiary designations on your policies and accounts agree with it?

Where they disagree, the designation on the account usually wins over the will.

Have you reviewed it in the last five years?

Even with no life change, the people named in it age alongside you.

Three sections: whether a will exists at all, whether anybody could find and use it, and whether it still matches your circumstances. Existence carries the most weight because nothing else in the tool matters without it.

Every question is yes/no and carries a weight of 1 to 3. A section scores the weight you answered “yes” to as a percentage of its total weight. The overall score combines the section percentages by the section weights shown on each heading, which always total 100, then rounds. Anything you have not answered counts as “no”, so a half-finished assessment always scores lower than the same situation fully answered — the score is never flattered by stopping early.

The score reflects only the answers you gave. It cannot see your documents, your accounts or the rules where you live, so treat it as a prompt for what to check next, not a verdict.
