Assets mapped

Have you documented all your bank accounts?

Savings, current, fixed deposits and joint accounts, with the bank name and account number.

Have you listed all investment accounts?

Demat, mutual funds, stocks and bonds, with the broker name and folio or client number.

Have you documented all insurance policies?

Life, health, term and endowment, with the policy number, insurer, sum assured and the nominee on record.

Have you listed all retirement accounts?

Provident fund, public provident fund, pension and gratuity, with the identifiers each scheme uses.

Have you documented all property holdings?

Residential, commercial and land, with the address, how it is owned, and where the registration papers are.

Have you listed crypto assets?

Wallets, exchange accounts and hardware devices — and, separately and securely, how each one can be recovered.

Have you documented business assets?

Shareholding, partnership deeds, key contracts, intellectual property and business bank accounts.

Have you listed digital assets?

Domains, cloud storage, paid subscriptions and any account that carries a balance or a renewal.

Nominees configured

Have you named a nominee for each major asset?

At least one named person per asset category, recorded with the institution that holds it.

Have you named backup nominees?

Someone to fall back on if the first person cannot be reached or does not outlive you.

Have you set asset-specific nominee rules?

Different people for different things, rather than one name against everything.

Have you set out how shared assets should split?

Written percentages for anything meant to go to more than one person.

Have you designated an executor?

The person who will actually administer the estate, and who knows they have been named.

Have you arranged scoped access for your professionals?

An accountant or lawyer able to see the documents relevant to them and nothing else.

Critical documents

Do you have a current will?

One that covers everything you own now and names a guardian if you have children who need one.

Do you have a power of attorney, financial and medical?

For the case where you are alive but unable to act for yourself.

Have you written down your medical wishes?

Treatment preferences, organ donation and end-of-life care, in whatever form is recognised where you live.

Are your insurance documents organised and reachable?

Policy documents, premium receipts and claim forms, findable by someone who is not you.

Are your trust documents in order, if you have a trust?

The deed, what has actually been moved into it, and who the trustees are. Answer yes if this does not apply to you.

Are your property documents organised?

Deeds, registration records, tax receipts and any encumbrance certificates.

Legacy instructions

Have you written personal messages for the people close to you?

Letters to a partner, children or parents — the part no document format has a field for.

Have you written down your final wishes?

Funeral arrangements, burial or cremation, and organ donation.

Have you used the platform legacy settings on your accounts?

Google's Inactive Account Manager, Apple's Legacy Contact, and the equivalents elsewhere.

Have you created messages meant for a future date?

Something for a child at a particular age, or a specific anniversary.

Have you documented business succession instructions?

Who takes over, what they need on day one, and where the shareholder agreements are.

Emergency access

Have you set emergency contacts for a hospitalisation?

People who can reach your medical and insurance details without you being able to help.

Have you planned for incapacity, not only for death?

A written path for who acts, on what evidence, while you are still alive.

Have you set up Travel Shield for trips where a device could be inspected?

It refuses biometric unlock and deletes the device's wrapped key, so an inspected phone cannot open the vault. Nothing is lost — the vault reopens with your passphrase.

Have you named guardians for children who would need them?

In writing, in the form recognised where you live. Answer yes if this does not apply to you.

Have you turned on periodic check-ins?

The scheduled prompt that confirms you are fine, and whose absence starts everything else.

Have you enabled biometric unlock?

Face or fingerprint unlock, backed by the device's own secure hardware.

Have you enrolled more than one device?

A second device you can still get in from if the first is lost, stolen or broken.

Have you configured what happens when a check-in is missed?

Who gets contacted, after how long, and on which channel — before anything is released.

Each question is worth between one and five points, set by how much trouble its absence tends to cause the people left behind. Every area is then scored as a percentage of its own points and combined using the weights shown beside each section heading.

The weights are our editorial judgement, not a standard. They are written down here so you can disagree with them: if crypto is most of your net worth, the Assets section matters more to you than the 25% we give it.

The score reflects only what you told it. It cannot see your documents, so it cannot know whether your will is valid, current, or says what you think it says — and it knows nothing about the rules where you live.

This is a self-assessment, not advice. It scores the answers you gave against a checklist we wrote — it does not see your documents, your accounts or your jurisdiction, and it is not legal, tax or financial advice. What is required varies by country. Treat the score as a prompt for what to look at next, and speak to a qualified professional about your own situation.
