85% of Indians have no will — and ₹2 lakh crore sits unclaimed

The data on will-writing in India is stark: very few people write a will, fewer still use a professional, and a vast pool of assets goes unclaimed because no one knew where to look. Here's what the numbers say — and why a private, shareable digital record matters.

~85%

of Indians do not have a will (only ~15% do)[1]

~62%

have no plans to make a will at all[1]

~80%

of those expecting an inheritance still haven't written their own will[1]

₹2 lakh cr

(~$24B) in unclaimed financial assets in India[3]

These figures are directional, not census data — the ~85% figure is from a single 2026 survey and the “fewer than 10%” estimate from industry sources. Each number links to its source below.

Very few Indians write a will

A 2026 study by 1 Finance found that about 85% of Indians do not have a will — only around 15% do, and roughly 62% have no plans to make one at all.[1] Other industry estimates are even lower, suggesting fewer than 10% of Indians create a formal will in their lifetime, compared with about 46% in the United States. Strikingly, even among people who expect to inherit wealth, nearly 80% still haven't written their own will.[1]

India has roughly 950 million–1 billion adults. If 10–15% ever make a will, that's somewhere in the range of 95–140 million people over a lifetime — but the number who hold a valid, current will at any given moment is much smaller, and only a fraction go through lawyers or chartered accountants.

Most wills are informal — and professional help is rare

A will in India is legally valid even without a lawyer, notary, or registration, so most people who make one do it informally: a plain handwritten document, often unregistered. Those who hire a lawyer or CA, or use a professional will-writing service, are concentrated among higher-net-worth families, NRIs, and people with complex assets.[2] Precise counts of how many use a professional aren't published — a genuine data gap.

The result: a mountain of unclaimed assets

India has an estimated ₹2 lakh crore (~$24 billion) in unclaimed financial assets — bank deposits, provident funds, insurance — largely because people die without documenting or sharing where their assets are.[3] The end-of-life and estate-planning market was about $1.7 billion in 2023 and is projected to reach $2.8 billion by 2030,[3]yet almost no digital infrastructure exists to store and share that information privately.

Where LifeWyn fits

Under-penetration is the opportunity. LifeWyn is a zero-knowledge vault: you store what matters, record who should receive it, and release access to the people you trust — only when the rules you set are met. Everything is encrypted on your device; we only ever hold ciphertext. It's the private “write, store, share, and track” layer that today's paper wills and scattered logins don't provide.

LifeWyn helps you organize and share information and is not a substitute for a legally executed will or professional legal advice. It provides guidance, not a legal will. Consult a qualified attorney to prepare legally binding estate documents.

Frequently asked questions

How many Indians have a will?

A 2026 survey by 1 Finance found roughly 15% of Indians have a will and about 85% do not, with ~62% having no plans to make one. Other industry estimates put formal will-creation below 10% over a lifetime. These figures are directional rather than census data.

Is a will legally valid in India without a lawyer?

Yes. In India a will is legally valid even if it is handwritten, unregistered, and not notarised or drafted by a lawyer. Most wills that exist are informal. Professional help (a lawyer or chartered accountant) is mainly used by higher-net-worth families, NRIs, and complex estates.

Why do so many assets go unclaimed in India?

An estimated ₹2 lakh crore (~$24 billion) in bank deposits, provident funds, and insurance sits unclaimed — largely because people die without documenting or sharing where their assets are or who should receive them.

How does LifeWyn help?

LifeWyn is a zero-knowledge vault that lets you store what matters, record who should receive it, and release access to trusted nominees only when your rules are met. It helps you organize and share information — it is guidance, not a substitute for a legally executed will.
