The rule most apps use
Being unreachable is not the same as being gone
Most apps in this category release your data when you stop responding. It is simple to build and easy to explain, and it rests on an assumption worth examining: that being unreachable means being gone.
Consider how often that is false. A three-week trek with a dead phone. A hospital stay with no signal. A stolen handset. A month in a country where your number does not work. A stretch of depression where you stopped answering anything at all.
In every one of those cases an inactivity-only system does the same thing: it hands your financial life to somebody while you are alive to watch it happen. That cannot be undone with an apology.

We keep landing in the same place: a release that comes a week late is an inconvenience, and a release that should not have happened cannot be undone.
